Delay & Reverb

Repeats and space, split by what the effect does to the signal it holds onto.

For delay, the axis is whether each repeat comes back intact or degrades — a clean digital line, versus tape and bucket-brigade models that lose top end and wobble in pitch on every pass, versus granular processing that scatters the buffer entirely. For reverb, it's whether the tail models a physical space or builds one that never existed.

How we got here

Delay began as a tape transport you could hear working. The Echoplex put a record head and a movable playback head on the same loop, so delay time was a mechanical distance, and the degradation everyone now pays for in plugins was just what tape did after a few passes. Bucket-brigade chips made a pedal-sized version possible in the late 1970s — the MN3005 and its relatives clocked a charge down a chain of capacitors, losing bandwidth at every stage, which is why analog delay sounds dark by nature rather than by design. Digital delay landed in the early 1980s: clean, quiet, and long.

Reverb went the same way. The EMT 140 was a two-square-metre steel plate in its own crate; springs made it portable enough for the 1961 Fender outboard unit and then for every combo amp after. Digital reverb from the late 1970s was expensive and, for the first time, tunable past what any physical space could do — and that headroom is where shimmer came from: a pitch shifter inside a reverb feedback loop with an octave up per pass.
