Gain & Drive

Three ways to clip a guitar signal, in rising order of how much the circuit rearranges the waveform.

A Tube Screamer clips softly inside an op-amp feedback loop and cuts bass before the gain stage, so it pushes an amp without thickening the low end. Blown-out overdrive saturates asymmetrically and holds note definition at gain settings where a screamer smears. Fuzz clips hard and rebuilds the envelope: attack, sustain and decay all change shape.

How we got here

Fuzz came first, and it came from broken equipment — a damaged console channel on a 1961 Nashville session, productionized as the Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone in 1962. The circuits that followed were built around whatever transistors were cheap: germanium in the Tone Bender and Fuzz Face, silicon after 1968, and four cascaded gain stages in the Big Muff. Nobody was modeling anything. They were making transistors misbehave in a way that sold.

Overdrive is the opposite impulse and arrived a decade later, once amps were loud enough that nobody could turn one up far enough to break up. The MXR Distortion+ and DOD 250 shunted a pair of diodes to ground after an op-amp stage. Boss's OD-1 in 1977 put the diodes inside the feedback loop, softening the knee so the circuit behaved more like a preamp than a chopper, and used an uneven number of them for asymmetric clipping — even-order harmonics, a different feel. Ibanez matched the diode pair for the TS-808 in 1979 (Boss held the patent on the asymmetrical arrangement) and added a tone control. That one distinction still sorts most drive pedals sold today.
